The other side of the Culinary Institute building… what shall we do?

Come on Hubbers, let’s hear your ideas – what do we do with the rest of the mall?

We’ve seen it before, one project at a time. Foresight isn’t a concept that comes easy to this area, and the development of the former Rainbow Center Shopping mall is no exception. Now that the culinary arts facility has gone from an idea, to a dream, and now a reality, there is an organized effort to find a future for the rest of the building.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it is great to get going, I just wish new ideas could be developed concurrently with progress made on projects already being worked on. Was anyone at the grand “almost opening” ceremony for the new Niagara Falls airport where they announced they were seeking plans and people to market the facility? Hello?!? Couldn’t you have started a marketing plan after the groundbreaking?

Be it as it may, USA Niagara, the City of Niagara Falls, National Grid and the Urban Land Institute Foundation are hosting some sessions to gather the ideas of developers, business owners, and basically, stakeholders in Niagara Falls, to complete the package that has gotten started with a great community asset, the Culinary Arts Center.

During the week of September 24, panel discussions and individual interviews will be held to solicit ideas and compare opportunities to utilize some of the most prime real estate in our city.

What do you think? Send your ideas as a comment to this article and we will bring them to our interview. No idea is without merit, so get creative and let’s see what we can come up with.

The person who submits a winning multi million dollar idea to save our city will get a voucher for half off on a car wash and a key to the City of Buffalo. Dan Akroyd took the last copy of Niagara Falls’ key for putting lousy vodka in a glass skull, and I heard Terrell Owens was sending his key back to Byron Brown.

So bring it on Hubbers, what should we do with the mall?

Group hopes to restore community one vacant home at a time

Busted drywall and wood is scattered on the porch of a beat up green and white home on Whitney Avenue.

The house has sat abandoned since the city took deed to the property in April of 2000. But, the 1,100 square foot building will soon transform from a vacant house to a classroom and then into a home.

At least that is the vision that Jim Haid is trying to turn into a reality.
