Man Charged with Attempted Murder

[From Niagara-Gazette.com]

A Falls man is in custody, charged with the attempted murder of another man early Sunday morning.

Falls Police detectives said they have charged Cordarise M. Houston, 23, 666 70th St., with attempted second-degree murder in the shooting of John Petty.

Petty, 24, was inside his home, in the 1900 block of Cudaback Avenue, at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday, when he shot seven times in the abdomen. He was rushed to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, before being transferred to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

He is currently listed in critical condition.

Detectives said Houston fled the home after the shooting. He was located on Monday afternoon by agents with the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force while “hiding-out” in a hotel on Niagara Falls Boulevard.

Houston was taken into custody without incident.

It’s not Houston’s first blush with violence on the city’s mean streets. He was released from prison in January after serving five years of a seven year term for his conviction in connection with a shooting in 2005 when he was just 17.

In that case, Houston pleaded guilty to both shooting a man in December 2005 and acting as a lookout when another man was shot during a home invasion in October 2005

Houston was jailed after his arrest and is scheduled to be arraigned in Falls City Court later this morning.

Ex-City Manager Abramowitz dies at 86

[From Niagara-Gazette.com]

A former city manager in Mayor E. Dent Lackey’s administration, Morton H. Abramowitz died on Sunday.

He played a key role in the dramatic changes during the urban renewal program, especially in the early 1970s with the $30-million Convention Center (now the Seneca Niagara Casino) and the 400-room Niagara Hilton hotel (The Sheraton at the Falls), site of the former New York Central Railroad Depot.

A respected authority on municipal law and city corporation affairs, Abramowitz served for many years at the county and city levels. At the time of his death, he was the legal advisor for the Niagara Falls City Council and the Niagara Falls Library Board.

He was a fixture for years at the Monday night council meetings.
