Sandy Barton: Stop and take a breather at one of life’s rest stops

“Next Rest Area 35 Miles.” I thought nothing of this sign on a recent trip to Ann Arbor, Mich., other than to ask if anyone needed to stop. Of course the mere suggestion of needing to stop was enough to gain consensus. The turn signal was engaged and we coasted into a parking space, emerged from the car, walking awkwardly until all of the joints began to move again, and made a beeline for the “necessary rooms,” the wall maps and, yes, the food oasis.

It wasn’t until a few days later that I realized how many of us are pulling off the road to take a breath. Unlike the brick and stone structures on the Thruway, the rest areas that seem to be utilized by everyone around me lately are significant breaking points between what was, and what is yet to be. I feel surrounded by extended pauses, tremendous exhaling of pent-up stress, and a lingering sense of waiting, preparing, catching a second wind, before heading out for round two, or three, or 23.

City officials celebrate completion of Lewiston Road project

[From Niagara-Gazette.com]

The original gateway between the City of Niagara Falls and the Village of Lewiston is now fully open and ready for traffic.

Gathered with representatives from the most recent construction firm to handle the project, several city engineers and state and county politicians, Falls Mayor Paul Dyster proclaimed the formal completion of one of the city’s most longstanding projects Wednesday, recognizing five summers of work on the alternative route bypassing the north section of the Robert Moses Parkway and servicing Niagara University.

“When we first broke ground on this project in April 2009, I doubt anyone believed we’d be here in August 2013 to declare the project completed,” Dyster said. “But we are. We’re finally at the end of this twisty, turning road.”

Shining a spotlight on casino cash

[From Niagara-Gazette.com]

State Sen. George Maziarz has announced plans to post the details of the city’s casino revenue spending online.

During a press conference Wednesday at City Hall, Maziarz, R-Newfane, said he has posted spending details from Niagara Falls Controller Maria Brown’s office on his official senatorial website. He said additional reports will be posted online as they are made available following future city council meetings. Maziarz said the move will give city residents greater access to casino revenue spending data, including date of approval by city council members, description of expenditure and the amounts involved.

“I believe in transparency and accountability,” Maziarz said. “I believe the people in the city of Niagara Falls have a right to know where that casino money is being spent.”
