Leaf pick up on Cayuga Island Monday and Tuesday

City crews will be tackling Cayuga Island in their leaf collection efforts on Monday and Tuesday.

City Hall requests that other city residents not to put their leaves on the street until they are notified that crews will be in their neighborhood.  They also request that bagged brush or leaves be held until regular trash pick up.

The Maid of The Mist has plucked its tourist-toting vessels from the waters of the of the Niagara Gorge and placed them on their newly-built dry dock on the former Schoellkopf Power Station site, a punctuation mark for the iconic attraction to a task that has been marred by controversy.

Maid owners and employees stood alongside state and city officials, the construction workers that have been working around the clock to complete the new dry dock and members of the press watching as the 125,000 ton Maid of the Mist VII was hoisted out of the water, her sister ship the Maid of the Mist VI waiting patiently in the rushing waters of the lower Niagara, as the ship was gently placed onto wood blocks to rest for the winter.

Governor calls Touma, Grandinetti and Walker ‘partners in progress’ in WNY

[From Niagara-Gazette.com]

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is throwing his weight behind the endorsed Democratic candidates running for three open seats on the Niagara Falls City Council this year.

Cuomo issued a press release earlier this week formally announcing his support for incumbents Kristen Grandinetti and Charles Walker and political newcomer, Andrew Touma, the top vote-getter in a four-way city council primary in September.

“Niagara Falls has an important decision to make. And I believe that Kristen Grandinetti, Andy Touma, and Charles Walker have shown that they share a clear vision for their city,” Cuomo said. “Tourism is a major component of our economic plans for Western New York and Niagara Falls needs elected officials committed to capitalizing on the city’s many strengths to generate jobs and economic growth.”

Higgins announces support for Niagara Falls Democrats

[Press Release]

Congressman Says Grandinetti, Walker & Touma Share His Vision For City
U.S. Representative Brian Higgins (D-26th District) today announced his support for Democratic City Council candidates Kristen Grandinetti, Charles Walker and Andy Touma.

“Kristen Grandinetti and Charles Walker have fought alongside Mayor Paul Dyster on behalf of Niagara Falls residents, and I sincerely hope that voters will reward them with another term,” said Higgins. “Along with a career educator and community leader like Andy Touma, they constitute a team that knows and understands the important issues facing the city, and are prepared to do the hard work necessary to make their visions for the city a reality,” Higgins added.

Higgins announced his support for the Democratic candidates in the lead-up to the General Election next Tuesday November 5. In making this endorsement, while lauding Touma’s service as a civic leader, Higgins placed particular emphasis on the records of incumbent council members Grandinetti and Walker, whom he says have a vision for the city’s future that he shares.

“While I have represented Niagara Falls for only ten months, I have witnessed firsthand the steadfast commitment that Kristen and Charles have for their hometown,” said Higgins, whose congressional district was redrawn in 2012 to include Niagara Falls. “Kristen, Charles and Andy share my vision for Niagara Falls’ future: increased access to the city’s waterfront and increased economic activity in downtown that will create new jobs for local residents. Niagara Falls’ best days are ahead of us, and this team, working in cooperation with Governor Cuomo and Mayor Dyster are the best people to get that job done,” Higgins concluded.

Niagara County Democratic Chairman Nicholas J. Forster welcomed Congressman Higgins endorsement. “This is the second major endorsement in the last two days and it demonstrates the importance of the Niagara Falls city council race to give Mayor Dyster the tools for progress necessary to move the city forward in a positive direction,” Forster said.

10 words your graphic designer wishes you knew

[From istockphoto.com by Rebecca Swift]

Working with a graphic designer is the best way to make sure your website or printed materials look professional. But sometimes it seems like your designer speaks a completely different language. Bridge that communication gap with this quick glossary.

1. Swipe file or tear sheet

A swipe file, or tear sheet, is a collection of things that inspire you, and might include magazine clippings or digital images. Designers will often pull examples from these files and other sources of inspiration to create mood boards, a collage of visuals that may include text, images, and color palettes to convey the desired look and feel of a project. Creating a mood board of your own helps gives your designer a sense of the aesthetic you’re going for and is a great way to get the conversation started…

Woman says some kids shouldn’t get Halloween candy; she’ll hand out fat letters

[From latimes.com by Amy Hubbard]

In case you missed it, a Fargo, N.D., woman called a local radio station Tuesday and said she was going to hand out letters to overweight children on Halloween instead of candy.

In the letter — which was sent to station Y-94 — the anonymous woman tells parents that the child is “moderately obese” and shouldn’t be out gathering free candy “to the extent of some children.”

Fargo news outlet Valley Live News quotes a professor of clinical psychology in saying the letter could topple some kids over the edge and straight into an eating disorder:  If the child is “vulnerable, it might trigger major problems.”

Perhaps it’s a Halloween trick.

There are few ways to make yourself less popular in a neighborhood than by telling people they have fat children.  The fireworks predictably were going off on social media.  The general consensus was that at the very least the author of the letter should be severely TP’d.

An upclose look at the Bates Motel today

[From RetroCrush.com by Robert Berry]

Earlier this year, I got a nice little tour round Universal Studios, and got to wander off the beaten path and get up closer to things that the tour tram is a lot further away from. I was thrilled and creeped out to see The Bates Motel up close, and actually wander up to Norman’s office door.  Here’s the original sign that’s still there after all these years. It looks extra creepy and white trashy now in the sunlight.
