Niagara Hospice, Schoellkopf Health Center to dedicate new hospice unit in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and Niagara Hospice will celebrate the opening of David’s Path, a dedicated hospice unit at Memorial’s Schoellkopf Health Center, during a dedication ceremony Wednesday, May 28 at 11 a.m.

The new unit, located on the second floor of the Schoellkopf Health Center, is a joint initiative of the Schoellkopf Health Center and Niagara Hospice and is named for David Winker, a beloved Memorial Medical Center employee who spent his final days surrounded by family members while being cared for at Niagara Hospice House.

David, who died in May 2013, was a dietary stores clerk who worked at Memorial for nearly 47 years. He was well known by his colleagues as a man who, except in the wintertime, rode his bicycle to work every day from his Town of Niagara home. Naming the new unit David’s Path provides a fitting tribute to David and his love of riding.

Jeffrey Basil was on a bender the night he pushed National Guardsman down the stairs causing severe injury

[From TWCnews.com]

In a felony hearing Friday against Molly’s Pub manager Jeffrey Basil, the defense portrayed the May 11 incident as a dispute between two drunks.

“It’s in a tavern. It’s at 2 o’clock in the morning. These things happen,” defense attorney Joel Daniels said. “We hope that Mr. Sager continues to improve and that he makes a full recovery. No one wants that more than this community, particularly myself and Mr. Basil.”
