Avery on Firefighters: “I’ve had house guests make a bigger mess!”

An electrical fire at 460 Third St. set back the renovation schedule for the commercial portion of the mixed-use building. Thanks to the quick and careful response of the Niagara Falls fire department, the damage was limited to some electrical equipment, a little water, and a lot of smoke. Owners John Guisiana and Craig Avery were on the scene shortly after being alerted through an alert passer-by who called the phone numbers posted on the building.

“When the guys got out of the fire truck with axes, I thought we were in for trouble,” Avery stated. “There was so much smoke in the building, you couldn’t see five feet. The firemen located the back door from inside and had it opened without damage before I could get there from the outside with the keys. Then they used a set of keys we had to four apartments upstairs and opened each one to let out the smoke. I would have asked them to empty the ashtrays and put down the toilet seat before they left, but they seemed busy. Seriously, I can’t thank them enough for a great job in minimizing damage and for the respect they gave to our property.”

The apartments were vacant at the time having been re-painted after housing foreign students working at various businesses this summer. “Thanks to the NFFD, another coat of paint may be all we need to get them back on the market. We will be assessing the damage and working quickly to open the doors,” Avery said.
