Love books but don’t want to spend a stack of cash as thick as “Gone With the Wind” for them? Then the Friends of the Niagara Falls Library Book Sale is for you. You will find quality gently used books of all genres and for all age groups. To assure a steady rotation of stock, the items are changed regularly. That best seller you wanted to read last summer, but didn’t want to pay full price for, may be available at a rock bottom deal. Be kind to your wallet or purse. Your dollars will go further when you buy used books from the Friends Sale. Prices vary, but one thing is for certain, the price is always a bargain!

It’s not just books, though. The sale also includes Albums, CDs and DVDs. Whatever your taste or whatever you’re after, there is sure to be something for everyone at the sale. The book sale takes place year round on the first floor at the Main Library (Earl Brydges building). There is also a mini-book sale at the LaSalle branch, featuring adult paperbacks and magazines. Sponsored by Friends of the Niagara Falls Public Library, you can purchase gently used items at a fraction of the retail cost. Items are priced at $1.00 and under. Adult materials can be found in the lobby near the circulation desk. Children’s materials are housed in the children’s department.

Friends is an organization dedicated to the continued well-being and enrichment of the Niagara Falls Public Library. The organization exists to promote and nurture the library as well as community literacy. Friends value public libraries as cultural, educational and recreational centers and contribute their time, effort, and the resources of their organization to further develop the libraries’ potential as a dynamic force in our community.

According to Michelle Petrazzoulo, the Library’s Executive Director, “Without the Friends of the Niagara Falls Public Library we would not be able to offer so many of the programs that we provide to the community. The contributions of this wonderful group of people are extremely vital to our services. I encourage anyone who values the library and wants to see their efforts truly make a difference, to become a Friend and get involved.”

You can support the Friends by shopping at the sale. Notable books are offered to the special collections of the Friends of the Local History Department, also housed at the Library. The Friends of the Library uses the proceeds to pay for things the library needs or could use that it doesn’t have funds set aside for in the budget. You or your organization could also become a member. Membership applications are available at the Circulation Desk.

These volunteers raise funds year round for special library projects. They are instrumental in promoting the importance of the library in the community, providing materials and equipment that the library could not ordinarily purchase as well as petitioning governmental leaders to maintain library funding and services. Now, more than ever, support is necessary in order to maintain our library system.

For over two decades, the Friends of the Niagara Falls Public Library have been dedicated to the continued well-being and enrichment of the city. Friends value public libraries as cultural, educational and recreational centers and contribute their time, effort, and the resources of their organization to further develop the libraries’ potential as a dynamic force in the community.

“The People of Niagara Falls are so generous,” said Chuck Curran, Vice President of the Friends of the Niagara Falls Public Library. “They donate hundreds of many great books annually for the benefit of the library.” Up to two bags of books (less than two years old or of historic interest) can be dropped at the front desk of the Earl http://www.niagarafallspubliclib.org/ during business hours. Please call 716-478-5956 to arrange larger or special donations. Book donations are tax deductible.

More information about the Friends can be found at http://www.niagarafallspubliclib.org/Pages/Friends.html. They are always interested in new supporters and new members. Membership brings many benefits, including invitations to special library events and volunteer opportunities. Beyond this, of course, support for the Friends brings the satisfaction of helping this great institution.
