Alicia Laible Announces Candidacy for Niagara Falls City Council

Cites Business Development, Operations Experience

Officially marking the start of election season for the Niagara Falls City Council, Alicia Laible, director of network development for Elderwood Health Plan and Executive Director of Elderwood Transportation, announced her candidacy on Tuesday with a video on her campaign’s YouTube channel.

This will be Laible’s second run for the City Council, the first ending in a narrow loss in 2011. Citing her experience in business development and business operations, Laible says she believes she is the right candidate to tackle the most important issues facing the Cataract City.

“Every day, our City Council has to prioritize spending, deciding how to attract jobs through economic development and provide high quality city services. As director of a business start-up, I know what businesses need to expand and relocate, and I know how to manage service delivery. I love this city, I believe in this city, and I want to put my expertise to work on behalf of its residents.”

Laible says she believes the city is moving in the right direction, but that there’s still work to be done. “There’s no question that we’re making forward progress. For the first time in a generation, our downtown skyline is changing for the better. Crime statistics are improving every year. But we still need to create many more well-paying jobs, continue to chip away at crime, and be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.”

Alicia earned her Bachelor’s degree at William Smith College where she studied Political Science and specialized in International Relations. Following graduation, Alicia traveled to Mexico, volunteering her time to teach English to impoverished young adults. Upon her return, Alicia spent two years working with individuals victimized by domestic and intimate partner violence through the AmeriCorps VISTA program. Alicia’s experiences encouraged her to return to school at the University at Buffalo, where she earned her Masters in Social Work.

Following graduate school, Alicia worked as a mental health and addictions therapist. She was eventually hired by start-up PACE Managed Long Term Care Program to provide supportive counseling to older adults. It was in this position that Alicia showcased her strength in business development and operations. She was quickly promoted to Program Director where she assumed responsibility for the administration of the company’s Social Center, and departments of Transportation, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Social Work, and Dietary Services.

Alicia recently joined the Elderwood Executive team to help start Elderwood Health Plan (EHP) which has applied for its COA to be a Managed Long Term Care program in Erie, Niagara, Monroe, Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming County. Alicia’s goal for EHP is to establish itself in the community as both a well-respected payor and provider. EHP aims to help those with chronic illness or disability to manage care at home and get the assistance they need by providing an array of support services. Alicia is also thrilled to be working as the Executive Director of a transportation company Elderwoood on the Move, LLC and looks forward to continuing to grow the company to better serve the needs of Western New York.

Alicia lives in Niagara Falls with her husband, Eric.

You are masking yourself to be an independent thinker in your video. You will rubber stamp all of Dysters resolutions. You were handpicked for his committee. How dumb do you think we are?

    You go girl!

Does the city need another social worker at city hall? Is that the mentality that will pull this city out of the hole it’s in ? No, not at all. Enough of the liberal crap !

I work in the private sector doing business development and contract negotiation. In other words, my main goal is to protect our assets and grow the business. Your argument is invalid.

Also, for the record, most of my time as a Social Worker (a profession I truly respect) was spent working with older adults. Older adults from all walks of life who needed someone to help coordinate their medical care or make sure they had a safe form of transportation to the grocery store. I fail to see how that is liberal. I think our golden generation deserves respect and all the support we can provide them.

We’ve had enough council people learn on the job. Too much time has passed without real progress, another yes girl for Dyster will makes things worse, yes everyone knows despite your video you will go along with whatever Paul wants. You might fit in nice between Grandinetti and Walker or Touma for a photo shoot but other than that you really don’t have any experience with budgets, hiring, or firing. Your job titles are, frankly substantially just social work and that’s what is cursing this town and incidentally the whole state! I also noticed you’re very thin skinned, that won’t hack it unless of course you want to reduce the amount of time that people are allotted to speak at the council meetings.
