Falls officials seek public input on community development funds

[From BuffaloNews.com]

City officials are looking for public input on how to spend federal funding that’s been allocated in recent years for projects, including a planned skate park, playground improvements and downtown housing.

Every year, the city gets money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which it allocates through its Community Development Department…

Center Cut lets beef lovers go big in Lewiston

[From buffalonews.com]

buff lewiston review

Lewiston might be the East Aurora of Niagara County. It’s a village with historic bones and enough bustling businesses to make a wander down Main Street an interesting stroll instead of a maudlin vacancy census.

Restaurants abound, with a barbecue joint, Italian red sauce and fine dining, family diners, Mexican fast food and Chinese takeout…

Historic Holy Trinity once again open for Friday summer tours

[Press release from Niagara Heritage of Hope and Service, Inc.]

Again this year, the popular Friday Summer Tours at Historic Holy Trinity have begun.

Each Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m.,the public is invited to tour the 1900s era Roman Catholic Church built on the east side of Niagara Falls for the Polish immigrants who migrated here to work in the newly developed industries that followed the building of the Niagara Power Plant.

After enjoying dinner at a local eatery, the public can view the interior of this beautiful edifice that is listed on the Local, State and National Registers of Historic Places.  Especially beautiful are the stain glass windows which can be seen in the light of the setting sun.

Built in 1906, the church was constructed by the Braas Brothers of native stone taken from the building of theHydraulic Canal.  The parish closed in 2008 and the complex was purchased from the Diocese by a not-for-profit group called Niagara Heritage of Hope and Service aka Historic Holy Trinity which works to preserve the structures, service the poor of the community and hold special events such as lectures, concerts and other public programs in the five building complex.

The tours will continue each Friday from June 5th until September 25th

(closed 4th of July and September 4 for the Labor Day weekend).

Opportunities Unlimited Fine Arts program receives regional award

[Press release from OUN]

OUN award

Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara’s Fine Arts Program was recently honored as the “DEC Program of the Year” at the Arts Services Initiative (ASI) of Western New York annual “Spark” Cultural Awards during a ceremony at the Hotel @ The Lafayette in Buffalo.

The Spark Awards honor “those who ignite arts and culture” in our area. Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara was selected for excellence in programming which provided opportunities for creative expression to individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities over the past five years. Led by Marcia Ross, a New York State certified teacher in visual arts, numerous on-site and community-based workshops explored visual, music and theater arts.

The workshops were funded in part by the Niagara County Community Arts DEC grant from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) established the Decentralization Program (DEC) in 1977 following the mandate of the state Legislature to encourage increased participation at the local level in the state’s cultural funding process. The purpose of the DEC program is to foster the continued development of local cultural resources responsive to community cultural needs. DEC support enables emerging artists and organizations to grow professionally and to enhance the cultural climate in communities and neighborhoods where they live and operate.

DEC helps to ensure access to the arts and culture to the citizens in each of the 62 counties of New York State, especially to areas that are geographically isolated, economically disadvantaged or ethnically diverse. The DEC Grant is administered by Arts Services Initiative for Erie and Niagara Counties.

For 60 years, Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, the Niagara County Chapter of NYSARC, Inc., has provided habilitation and supportive services to people with developmental disabilities of all ages and their families. We are dedicated to maximizing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by providing them the resources to reach their greatest potential including training, employment, recreation, service coordination, fine arts, horticulture therapy and residential opportunities.
