Photojournalist Shares Experiences with Graphic Communications Students

Photojournalist, Alex Chionetti, visited the students at Niagara Career and Technical Center’s Graphic Communications class recently.  He made a special appearance to talk about his 30 plus years of photojournalism and media experience with Karen Krull’s class.

He shared with the students his experience from his early beginnings of being a photojournalist and a co-publisher of the magazine Herald, which was the first bilingual Spanish/ English publication for the entertainment industry. “The description of his younger self aspiring to become a photojournalist and focusing on capturing wildlife was and still is a true marvel. He is now one of my heroes,” says student Lucas Kates.   Classmate Keira Fletcher said, “It was nice that he spent a little bit of time with each student, to look over some of our individual work and find out what our interests are. It’s always good to have feedback from people who are in the graphics workfield.”

He is currently co-director of the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival (BNFF). He has been developing and collaborating in eclectic shows such as the History Channel’s series Ancient Aliens, which is based on his own explorations and research. Mr. Chionetti also shared his personal beliefs on photojournalism in this digital age with the class. “We hide behind the art of photojournalism and use it for instant communication, which devalues the concept of photography.”
