Assemblyman Ceretto: New laws are positive step for women; now let’s pass paid family leave

[Statement from Assemblyman Ceretto]

“Today, several important new laws that I voted for go into effect. Women will now be able to ask about pay in the workplace to determine if they are being compensated fairly, without fear of retaliation. Housing discrimination against domestic violence victims will come to an end. New measures also protect victims of human trafficking by imposing stiff penalties, providing training for law enforcement and empowering victims to sue for damages. In addition, new laws ensure that pregnant women are accommodated in the workplace and that individuals are not discriminated against based on familial status.

“As the father of two daughters, and having recently welcomed a wonderful granddaughter, I am personally committed to seeing a brighter future for women in New York State and I am proud of the progress we have made. However, while these are key protections for women and for families, there’s still more to do. Nobody should have to risk their job or financial security in order to care for a sick family member or a newborn child. This year, I call on the state Senate to pass paid family and medical leave legislation so that New York will truly be a family-friendly place to work.”
