“Monster; an interpretation” Youth Art Show February 19th

What if your fate rested in the hands of 12 strangers? What if those strangers would make their decision based on how you looked or what people have said about you? What is the truth, and how do we know it? What is justice, and is it the same for everyone? These are the questions a group of insightful young men from the Liberty Partnerships Program at Gaskill Preparatory have been asking and struggling to answer this year. They participated in a discussion-based literacy group that engages them in big-picture critical thinking about literature, their lives, and current events.

Join us for an art show that will explore challenging themes of identity, justice, and truth, all through the eyes of a group of Niagara Falls middle school students. The show will present our artists’ self-portraits using manipulated media, and the opening will feature spoken word and excerpts from the book “Monster” by Walter Dean Myers. Featured artists will also explain their interpretations and connections with works from Langston Hughes and Tupac Shakur. This project was made possible by generous funding from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and has been facilitated by Niagara County Community College’s Liberty Partnerships Program. The opening will take place at 24 Below Art Gallery on Third Street in Niagara Falls from 6-9 pm on February 19th.

We hope you will attend and continue the conversation with us!
