Dumb hairstyles of the 1970s

[From DangerousMinds.net]

No, these are not mug shots of the most wanted criminals from the 1970s—though the confusion is quite understandable, considering how these hirsute models could have probably been successfully prosecuted for crimes against good taste—no, these are genuine head shots of once fashionable hairstyles from the 1970s, and I’m sure a few of us can recognize ourselves here… I know I can.

You see, back in the 1970s, unless you opted for a standard short-back-and-sides, your local barber might attempt these cuts on your unsuspecting hair follicles…

Relatives Gather From Across The Country To Stare Into Screens Together

[From www.theonion.com]

OAK CREEK, WI—Turning on the television while unpacking tablets, iPhones, and laptops from their suitcases, members of the McPherson family communed from across the nation this holiday season for several straight days of staring into electronic screens while in the same room together, sources confirmed Friday. “Nothing puts me in the Christmas spirit more than sitting down on the couch with my parents and siblings, turning on the TV, and then proceeding to either look at the screen or gaze down into my glowing tablet display for hours on end,” 28-year-old Andrew McPherson told reporters, adding that he always felt most connected to his relatives when they were both silently gazing into glowing screens of some kind.

“It’s just great to get home for a while and spend some quality time not speaking a single word to my relatives, whether that’s by sipping hot cocoa with my sister while we both check our emails, or by gathering the whole clan for a nice holiday meal where everyone is fixedly looking down at the text messages on their phones—’tis the season, you know?” McPherson noted he was sad, however, that Grandpa Sam would not be there to stare into screens with them this year

Bloopers and outtakes from Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas

Well Dear Readers, if you grew up with HBO in the early 1980s (like Yours Truly), than I know you will dig this video of Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas outtakes from the music store scene.  Interesting to see how some behind the scenes puppetry works as well as just seeing more of these characters in action [You’ll notice Frank Oz voicing Emmet’s mother, which isn’t the same as in the final production]:

Science of the perfect chocolate-chip cookie

[From BoingBoing.net]

J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, chief creative officer for Serious Eats, delved very, very deep into the science of making the perfect chocolate chip cookie. He’s got a very specific definition of “perfect” (“…Barely crisp around the edges with a buttery, toffee-like crunch that transitions into a chewy, moist center that bends like caramel, rich with butter and big pockets of melted chocolate… with crackly, craggy tops and the complex aroma of butterscotch…that elusive perfect balance between sweet and salty”).

But the food science in his piece is deep and fascinating, and provides a kind of road-map for any definition of cookie-perfection…

Severed hand grafted to ankle, reattached to wrist a month later

[From BoingBoing.net]

When Xiao Wei’s right hand was severed in an industrial accident, doctors at a hospital in Changde, China, grafted it to his ankle. The blood supply from his ankle kept the hand alive and viable on the seven-hour journey to a larger hospital with better facilities, where it was removed a month later from his ankle and reattached to his wrist. It’s not clear whether he’ll regain the use of his hand, but doctors are hopeful.

Original ‘Star Wars’ Blooper Reel

[From HuffingtonPost.com via House of Fantasy]

These are the “Star Wars” flubs fans have been looking for since July. Reddit user forceduse posted this original “Star Wars” blooper reel, which author J.W. Rinzler, who has written books on the making of “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” first screened at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego. Mistakes of note: Peter Cushing goofing around with Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford eating his headset and Mark Hamill trying to figure out the proper way to pronounce “supernova.” The clip’s first 48 seconds are silent, but no less amazing. May the Force be by you. With you. Eh, just watch below:

Banksy sells art on the cheap in NYC

[From CBSnews.com]

Banksy, the elusive British graffiti artist who has taken up a month-long residency in New York, sold a few of his pieces on the cheap over the weekend.

And by cheap — we mean $60 apiece. This is the same artist who has sold his art for thousands of dollars, sometimes hundreds of thousands.

Banksy revealed on his website that he had set up a table in New York City’s Central Park on Saturday with original signed pieces. “Yesterday I set up a stall in the park selling 100% authentic original signed Banksy canvases. For $60 each,” he wrote. But they weren’t there for long, apparently. “That stall will not be there again today,” he wrote Sunday…
