The Tech Party So Obnoxious It Doesn’t Seem Real

[From http://valleywag.gawker.com]

Silicon Valley must now be trying to make you hate it. There’s no other explanation for the “Startup and Tech Mixer,” an assemblage of 2,500 San Francisco techies who sipped cocktails, networked, rode a mechanical bull, and produced some of the most nightmarishly obnoxious quotes I’ve (the author) ever read…

[From TechCrunch.com]

The kids woke up, the parents got called out of bed and for a few hours, shockingly, it looks like the family put down their mobiles on Christmas morning, according to data from Mixpanel, a mobile and web analytics company.

Welcome to the data-driven Christmas. A day that can be tracked in detail by mining the data on our phones and tablets. As proven by Mixpanel, data analytics can now tell when we open our presents, take a break and then once again immerse ourselves in our apps…

11 Classic Video Games You Can Play Online

Pitfall was the best. I can’t imagine how many hours I spent in the early 1980s making Pitfall Harry jump crocs and swing on vines while racing to collect gold and silver.  As bad as E.T. supposedly was (read the link), I actually passed the game and got E.T. home.  Yar’s Revenge?  Fuhgetaboutit… I’d be up for hours playing that game.  Ahhhh, Atari 2600, oh how I miss thee.  But wait!  Thanks to MentalFloss.com I can get my fix… what a rush!

10 words your graphic designer wishes you knew

[From istockphoto.com by Rebecca Swift]

Working with a graphic designer is the best way to make sure your website or printed materials look professional. But sometimes it seems like your designer speaks a completely different language. Bridge that communication gap with this quick glossary.

1. Swipe file or tear sheet

A swipe file, or tear sheet, is a collection of things that inspire you, and might include magazine clippings or digital images. Designers will often pull examples from these files and other sources of inspiration to create mood boards, a collage of visuals that may include text, images, and color palettes to convey the desired look and feel of a project. Creating a mood board of your own helps gives your designer a sense of the aesthetic you’re going for and is a great way to get the conversation started…

Meet the woman behind the voice of Apple’s Siri

[From FireWireBlog.com]

Susan Bennett, an Atlanta-area voice actress, has revealed herself as the original voice of Siri. Though Apple won’t confirm Bennett as the voice, CNN reports, “Professionals who know her voice, have worked with her and represent her legally say she is Siri. And an audio-forensics expert with 30 years of experience has studied both voices and says he is ‘100%’ certain the two are the same.”

Though Siri didn’t debut until Oct. 4, 2011 during the unveiling of the iPhone 4S, Bennett unknowingly recorded voice samples for the virtual assistant in July 2005. Under contract with ScanSoft, Bennett recorded samples for four hours a day that month.

Bennett didn’t find out she was Siri’s voice until the iPhone 4S was released. A colleague with the new phone emailed Bennett, asking if she was Siri. Bennett checked Apple’s website to hear the audio. “Oh, I knew,” she said. “It’s obviously me. It’s my voice.”

Ben Affleck revealed as new Batman

[From FireWireBlog.com]

Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in “Man of Steel.”  The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The studio has slated the film to open worldwide on July 17, 2015.

Last month’s surprise announcement of the new movie featuring both Superman and Batman created a wave of excitement and immediately fueled discussion and debate—among fans as well as in the media—about who would put on the cape and cowl of Bruce Wayne’s alter ego.

Snyder successfully re-imagined the origin of Clark Kent/Superman in the worldwide blockbuster “Man of Steel,” which has earned more than $650 million worldwide to date, and climbing. The director will now create an original vision of Batman and his world for the film that brings the two DC Comics icons together.

Affleck will star opposite Henry Cavill, who will reprise the role of Superman/Clark Kent. The film will also reunite “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.
