Seneca Resorts announces summer entertainment lineup

Seneca Resorts & Casinos turn up the heat with ‘Summer Rush’ entertainment lineup

Summer nights in Western New York promise to be a little hotter and the stars even brighter, thanks to the Summer Rush entertainment lineup announced today by Seneca Resorts & Casinos.

A slate of outstanding August concerts is headlined by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Joan Jett and the Blackhearts at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino at 8 p.m. on Friday, August 14. That same night, the legendary Meat Loaf will light up the Events Center at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino with an electrifying show at 8 p.m. Other August performances include Gloriana at Seneca Niagara on Saturday, August 1, Walter Trout inside the intimate Bear’s Den Showroom at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino on Friday, August 7, and the sensational country music duo Montgomery Gentry at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino on Friday, August 28. Tickets for all August shows go on sale Friday, May 1 at Noon.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, powered by a potent mix of hard rock, glam, punk, metal and garage rock, exploded onto the music scene with their Number One hit “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” in 1982. With three Top 20 albums and a string of memorable songs, the band became one of the flag-bearers for rock music in the 1980s and’90s, and have shared the stage with some of rock music’s grandest names, including The Who, Aerosmith, The Police, and Queen, among others. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts earned their place among the music elite when they were selected for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year.

One of the best-selling artists of all time, with more than 80 million records sold to date, Meat Loaf seared his name into the lexicon of popular music with his powerful voice and larger-than-life live performances. His breakthrough album, the iconic Bat Out of Hell, produced a collection of powerful and memorable songs, including “You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth,” “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad,” and “Paradise by the Dashboard Lights,” earning him widespread acclaim. Meat Loaf later won a Grammy Award for the single “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)”, from the 1993 release Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell.

The August concerts join an already jam-packed summer entertainment lineup at Seneca Resorts & Casinos, including performances by Kathy Griffin (May 23), MOVE Live on Tour (July 4 and 5), and Brian McKnight (July 18) at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, and Ron White (May 30), Barenaked Ladies with special guests Violent Femmes and Colin Hay (June 21), and Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo (July 3) at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino, as well as a night of world-class boxing when Seneca Niagara hosts “Championship Boxing on CBS Sports Network” on June 26.

Tickets for all shows and events are available at select Seneca Resort & Casino retail outlets, Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations or by phone at 800-745-3000.

7th Annual “Run with the Rapids” 5K Race to Benefit the Downtown NF Business Association

Are you 5k ready?

The 7th Annual “Run with the Rapids” 5K Race will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015, in Downtown Niagara Falls, NY.  This annual race benefits the Downtown Niagara Falls Business Association (DNFBA). Race registration and the Post Race Party will be held on Old Falls Street’s Middle Block.  Check-in time is from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. with a race start time of 9 a.m.  The Post Race Party is from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Because of the recent reconstruction of the Robert Moses Parkway, this year’s course will be rerouted to showcase more of the Downtown Niagara Falls area, including the Aquarium of Niagara and businesses along Third Street.  The race will start at its regular spot, on the corner of Third and Old Falls Streets, and guides participants through the recent developments in the downtown area.  Seasoned and amateur participants are encouraged to register.

Returning this year will be chip timing by Score This.  Runners will receive electronic devices to insert in their shoes that will be able to compute finish times to thousandths of a second.

Race registration forms are posted on www.FallsStreet.com or can be obtained by contacting Katie Kielaszek, race coordinator, at (716) 278-2100 or at FallsStreet@gmail.com.  Prepayment can be made online at www.score-this.com.  Pre-registration price for a single participant is $25 or $45 for a pair (2 people only) of runners.  Participants aged 65 and over are free, although a registration form is still needed.  Onsite race registration is $30 per person.

The festive Post Race Party is held on Old Falls Street, USA, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.  The party features a buffet picnic, beer, soft drinks and music provided by D&B DJ & Karaoke. The party is free for paid participants and is also open to the general public with the purchase of a $10 wristband.

“This fund-raiser is the official kick-off of the 2015 Old Falls Street summer season,” said Susan Swiatkowski, DNFBA president and Old Falls Street’s marketing director.  “Visitors and residents alike will enjoy the course as it highlights the many new changes to our downtown landscape as all area businesses prepare for our busy summer season.”

In addition to participants, the DNFBA is also looking for race volunteers.  Volunteers will help mark the intersections of the course and provide water for participants.  Those wishing to help should call (716) 278-2100.

The goal of the DNFBA is to create a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood, with commercial, retail and residential development elements that service several market segments and ultimately result in capturing more tourist visitation to Downtown Niagara Falls.

The race is sponsored by Global Spectrum, The Conference & Event Center Niagara Falls, Old Falls Street, USA, the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, Try-It Distributing, Hard Rock Cafe – Niagara Falls, USA, the Quality Hotel & Suites, Legends Bar & Grill, the Niagara Gazette, Sheraton At The Falls, the Holiday Inn, the Comfort Inn – The Pointe, and ROAD ID.

For more information or to pre-register for the event, visit www.FallsStreet.com or follow this link:  https://reg.score-this.com/regx/step1.jsp?eventID=1447.

Vacation Time! To the Berkshires from Niagara [by 2chicks2go.com]

[From 2chicks2go.wordpress.com]

Hankcock Shaker

When my daughter and I started this blog, a couple of years back, we promised several things as intentions. Obviously, we love featuring Niagara Falls, it’s beauty, seasons, ‘delectabilities’, restaurants, and things to see and do. But this is also a travel blog; for those of you who travel here, to Niagara, but also for our travels too! Far & near!

If you look back, one of the chicks shared her travels to Europe, Venice, Italy and Germany.

Another has shared about places closer, and often within a day’s journey of Niagara…

Spring is here for Oakwood: 4th Annual “Bird Walk” and “Beautify Oakwood”

The 4th Annual “Bird Walk” at the historic Oakwood Cemetery

oakwood1

763 Portage Road, Niagara Falls

8 AM on two consecutive Saturdays:  May 2 and May 9

Free and open to the public, birders are asked to meet at the Oakwood House to register and pick-up a free “Migrating Birds of Niagara Checklist”.  Please bring binoculars and cameras; wear weather appropriate clothing with comfortable shoes.  Free parking and open restrooms are available on site.

Whitney Mallam, president of the Oakwood Cemetery Association board of directors and chair of the event, invites interested persons to join him on the two special outings: “I look forward to sharing this experience with other birders and nature lovers.  Our historic, mid-19th century, 18 acre site is a jewel in the center of the city.  It’s truly an out-of-doors museum and the migrating birds enhance its beauty.”

A breath of fresh air, this unique experience is a delight!  While strolling the historic lanes in the early morning light, today’s birders will come upon wonderful sightings – rolling landscape and birds from as far away as South America make their spring migration up the east coast of the United States.  Many resting sites can be found in Western New York and, for some, summer nesting places.  Oakwood Cemetery, with prime vegetation and habitation, is one of these sites.

Following the “Bird Walk”, and as part of the Niagara Beautification Commission (NBC) “Beautify Niagara”, individual volunteers and groups will organize at Oakwood House.  Chaired by Trudy Christman, “Beautify Oakwood” will include:  Congressman Higgins’ staff, AARP #283, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to name a few.  “Oakwood Beautifiers” are asked to bring their own trash-collecting tools.

The NBC, the City of Niagara Falls and the Seneca Niagara Casino will provide a kick off breakfast at 8 AM, trash bags and gloves, and a “Volunteer: Thank You Lunch” at noon at the John Duke Senior Center, 1201 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls, NY.

For more information and photos of past events, please go to Oakwood Cemetery’s website: www.myoakwoodcemetery.com
