National Weather Service: Sustained snow and cold ‘done’ for winter

Here’s what you’ve been waiting to hear for months: John Hitchcock of the National Weather Service tells the Niagara Hub that on top of the temperature spike we’re due to see over the next few days, the end is near. Of winter, that is.

“It does look like any sustained cold and winter is just about done for the year,” Hitchcock said.

The good news kicks in immediately. After a cold Tuesday morning, temperatures are expected to jump into the 40s today, and then might approach 60 tomorrow.

As for the weekend, early forecasts have Sunday as a mostly sunny day with the thermometer in the 50s.

“It’s still only early March, so I’m sure we’ll still get some snow over the next month and half, but the long range outlook looks above normal for most of the time through the next couple weeks,” Hitchcock said.

“It looks like a fairly mild first half of March. Once we get into later March, even if we do get a little snow, it usually only lasts for a day or two before it warms up again.”
