Union warns Canadian guard cuts could compromise border security

Will border security be compromised on the Canadian side of the border by federal spending cuts?

That’s what the union representing Niagara border guards has warned after more than 1,100 layoff notices were handed out by the Canada Border Services Agency earlier this week, including approximately 95 letters sent to employees in southern Ontario.

According to a story by Alison Langley of the Niagara Falls Review, it’s not known at this time how many workers will be affected in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie specifically as the southern Ontario region includes Windsor and Sarnia.

The story said:

Customs and Immigration Union national president Jean-Pierre Fortin on Thursday said a total of 1,026 jobs will be eliminated within three years.

He said the cuts will lead to an increase in weapons, drugs and child pornography entering Canada.

The CIU represents 11,000 public safety workers with the CBSA.
