Audio: National Weather Service’s Wood says wet snow could mean downed power limbs

Get ready for one final squeeze of winter today as weather forecasters are calling for between four and eight inches of snow here below the falls, and because the trees have already started to bloom, there’s a chance we could be in line for power outages.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Warning for all of Western New York in effect until tomorrow morning at 7 a.m.

Forecasters say the system will likely exceed Buffalo’s previous season high of six-point-four inches of snow back on Jan. 13.

Jeff Wood of the National Weather Service said wind will be a significant part of this storm, but it won’t be its signature.

“We’re looking at winds 20 to 30 miles per hour across Niagara County, and with the snow falling it’s going to produce reduced visibility,” Wood said.

“But the main hazard we’re really worried about with this is this heavy, wet snow that’s going to be falling. Some of the trees have started to leaf out already and with that wet snow accumulating on that, there’s potential for falling limbs and that could create local power outages.”

The Southern Tier could even see more than a foot of snow as a noreaster crawls up the East Coast.
