Opposition to Ferry Avenue mission sees other side of the story [by Craig Avery]

After basically threatening city council members two weeks ago to take action, neighbors objecting to Niagara Gospel Rescue Mission heard some compassionate testimonials from several sources at the most recent council meeting, the one they vowed, “we’ll be back.”

Men who have been served at the mission spoke on how their lives have changed, how their lives have been saved.

Prominent business woman, Jennifer Cooper is a volunteer at the mission.  She passionately described the benefits provided by this Christian-based organization.  John Signorelli, the owner of a successful electrical contracting business in Niagara Falls, told how he was able to take a homeless man to the mission, likely saving his life.  He fears that closing the mission would reduce the choices for people who need help.

Standing ovations from 30 or more supporters followed as each speaker asked the council to support and not close the embattled organization.  The only neighbor who spoke, praised the mission for what they do, how they keep up their property, and felt quite comfortable with the residents and staff of the Niagara Gospel Rescue Mission.

Two sides of a story promise a more complete review of the issues.  Stay tuned as the community works to blend the concerns of some with the beneficial services of others.
