This June marks the tenth year the Lewiston Garden Club has combined Lewiston’s historic Center Street with their love of gardening at the annual Lewiston GardenFest. On Saturday, June 20 and Sunday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, the event will include gardening demonstrations and more than 60 vendors selling flowers, plants, garden art and more along Center Street. Lewiston residents also showcase their green thumbs with several gardens available in and around the village participating in a free garden walk.

“Lewiston GardenFest is organized completely by volunteers and we are excited to celebrate this milestone as it’s truly been a labor of love for gardening and for our community,” said Barbara Landree, Lewiston GardenFest chair. “It’s an event that appeals to gardeners of all skill levels from across our local communities and Southern Ontario and provides plenty of ideas and how-to’s to beautify one’s outdoor space.”

After the success of the interactive Garden Talks at last year’s event, they are back and scheduled throughout the weekend at the Community Tent located in the center of the festival route. Join Mark Yadon of Mischler’s Florist and Greenhouses on Saturday at 11 a.m. His demonstration, “Fairy and Miniature Gardens” will showcase miniature landscape designs, in both pots and gardens and using and maintaining slow growing plants. On Saturday at 2 p.m. Master Gardener Carol Ann Harlos and chairperson of Herb Gardeners of the Niagara Frontier will bring fresh herbs from the June garden and discuss ways to make herbs part of one’s daily life. On Sunday at 11 a.m., Linda O’Connor from Summertime Blooms offers simple floral designs from your garden in her session titled, “I bet you never thought of that!” To conclude the weekend, Bob Bracikowski from Opportunities Unlimited demonstrates techniques necessary for  “Making cactus plants your friends without the bite – planting and care made easy” on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Representatives from Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Hosta & Daylily Society, and the Bonsai Society are also available throughout the weekend to answer your gardening questions. In addition Cornell Cooperative Extension is providing soil sample analysis.

Join the free garden walk and view several private gardens of Lewiston residents, which are opened up to the public for Lewiston GardenFest weekend only. They vary in size and style and are located both within walking distance and also a short drive from Center Street. Pick up a map highlighting the featured gardens at one of the hospitality booths during the event.

Or put your own gardening skills to the test by participating in the Container Garden Contest. Prepare a special arrangement in a traditional container or think outside the planter and find a vessel which appeals to your creative side. Bring your container entry and a stand for display to the hospitality booth located at Fourth and Center Streets by 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 20. Festivalgoers can vote for their favorites throughout the weekend and prizes will be awarded to the top vote-getters. Container Garden Contest applications are available at www.lewistongardenfest.com.

Lewiston GardenFest is free to attend and all proceeds are given back to the local community for civic beautification and scholarships. Lewiston GardenFest is sponsored by Town of Lewiston, Village of Lewiston, Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, Modern Corporation, and Dimino’s Lewiston Tops Markets in addition to dozens of local businesses.
