“The headlines say it all… this catastrophe produced a shortage of low-cost in the Niagara region, and electricity had to be routed in from other sources. Since the early 50’s, a consortium of five power companies had been negotiating to build a new power station near Niagara University, opposite Ontario’s Sir Adam Beck Station. They bickered and bickered as to whether or not the new plant should be private or public. However with the loss of power from the destroyed Schoellkopf station, the government was compelled to step in and come to a hasty decision. On August 21, 1957, President Eisenhower signed the Niagara Redevelopment Act, authorizing the New York Power Authority to undertake the project, but it was not until Jan. 30, 1958, that the Power Authority received its license from the Federal Power Commission.
