Captain Joel Robinson takes the Maid of the Mist through the Whirlpool Rapids in 1861. The Maid of the Mist had been sold due to the outbreak of the American Civil War and it’s detrimental effect on Niagara tourism. Before payment would be made the boat had to be delivered to Queenston Ontario. Captain Robinson volunteered to guide the boat to it’s destination through the deadly Whirlpool Rapids. He was successful in that endeavor but vowed never to go near the Niagara River again. Via Max Eddy
