One of the first photographs taken at Niagara Falls:
Joseph Avery was stranded near Bath (Green) Island on July 19th 1853 when his boat was drawn into the deadly American Rapids after the oars broke. Two companions were immediately swept over the American Falls. Numerous rescue attempts failed. Eventually Avery was killed when he fell into the water and went over the Falls after a terror filled night spent on the rock that still bears his name. – via Max Eddy
