Senecas revive laughter in Niagara Falls (by Craig Avery)

barrel-of-laughs
Now that the tourists are gone, who do we laugh at?  The Seneca Niagara Casino saves us again with their monthly hosting of “Barrel of Laughs Comedy Night,” in the fabulous Bear’s Den Showroom.  We went Thursday Night, and I’m like, “Toto, this isn’t Kansas anymore…”  The headliner stand-up comics, Julian McCullough and Robert Kelly, took more jabs at their hometowns, Philadelphia and Boston respectfully, than easy shots at Buffalo/Niagara Falls on a cold and snowy night. A few in the crowd gave them plenty of opportunity to trash our residents and/or guests, but they were gentle on us. One woman in particular, we’ll call her Linda because that’s what she said her name was, saved herself from certain public dismantling by simply buying Mr. McCullough a glass of wine. Local traditions come in handy when a guy with a microphone from out of town is about to talk about your personal pleasures to a crowd of people who can each see your seat from where they are!

The real deal of the night was seeing Niagara Falls’ own Allyson Demunda as the opening act.  Everybody I saw headed into the show had the same line: “My friend Allyson is doin’ this tonight!”  She did it alright.  What a beautiful girl, and how cool it was to see her on stage in front of her family, friends, bus stop buddies, and waitresses that served her a coffee two years ago on Main Street.  She had some great stories, got the crowd revved up and made us all proud.
Before the show, enjoy a nice bistro dinner at the Western Door Steakhouse.  Prime rib sliders, calamari, and a bottle of some kind of wine that goes with both are just enough to get you set for a night of laughing.

So catch the show next month, make sure you plan to get out and enjoy your hometown like you live in a big city.  Go to the Seneca Niagara Casino on February 2 at 8:00 to laugh with Matt Richards and Leonard Ouzts.  Don’t know them?  Google them.  And get your tickets and info online at  www.senecaniagaracasino.com
