Jamie Holka and Bruce Wojick

Jamie Holka’s monthly installment – this time with a  special guest, Bruce Wojick. Between songs from Genesis and Joan Osborne, we let the camera just run with minimal editing and together, the two have no problem finding their own improvisational rhythm paired with general wayward dialogue. HubVideo: Niagara Falls International Railway Station Breaks Ground

[Press Release]

Niagara Falls International Railway Station & Intermodal Transportation
Center set to connect rail visitors to downtown attractions

Niagara Falls, NY – Officials from all levels of government were on hand for the long-anticipated groundbreaking of the Niagara Falls International Railway Station & Intermodal Transportation Center at the site of the historic U.S. Customhouse on Whirpool Street Monday. The occasion marks both the beginning of a new chapter in the city’s efforts to ensure continued passenger rail connectivity to Buffalo and Toronto, and the construction of the first high speed rail station in New York State to receive Federal TIGER II discretionary funding.

Once completed, the $25 million project will include the renovation of the U.S. Customhouse, a nationally-registered historic location, for use as a Department of Homeland Security border inspection and processing station. The station will serve as a transportation hub, bringing visitors close to bus routes, pedestrian and bicycle paths, taxis, shuttles, and lots facilitating “park-and-ride” transportation options.

Mayor Paul Dyster: “We are finally building the hub of transit-oriented development that Niagara Falls and western New York deserve. The new station will put passengers in the heart of the Falls, provide seamless links to other modes of transportation and better support our local economy. This project is decades in the making and long overdue. Today, our trades men and women start to turn an idea into reality and earn a good wage while doing it. Today, a plan turns into action.”

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer: “For nearly three decades, the Niagara Falls International Railway Station has been a goal for the community, and for forward-thinking leaders like Mayor Dyster, Representatives Slaughter and Higgins, and many more. That’s why together we’ve fought for federal, state and local funding to turn this dream into a reality. Because with the completion of this station, rail will once again be the conductor of the regional economy, with the potential to generate millions annually in tourism revenue from visitors coming from Canada and throughout the Northeast. Finally, we have construction plans in place and shovels in the ground to build this transformational transportation and culture hub, and along with it, an economy in Niagara Falls as great and as powerful as the wonder from which it gets its name”

Congressman Brian Higgins:  “Niagara Falls has a unique natural resource that no other community can claim.  So when we combine projects like this transportation center with ongoing improvements to Niagara Falls State Park and removal of the Robert Moses Parkway, we are building the infrastructure to support a better tourist experience and welcome new economic development.”

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald: “This is a great project for the city of Niagara Falls,  which will result in a modern, safe and efficient multimodal transportation center, and support new economic activity for the city. Thanks to Governor Cuomo’s leadership and partnerships with Amtrak and CSX, this important new transportation hub will become a reality.”

Niagara Falls City Council Chairman Charles Walker: “This may be the most important construction project in our city this century. This facility provides rail travel across the region in a safe and accessible setting for our residents, while connecting visitors directly to our waterfront and downtown businesses district.”

Niagara Falls City Councilman Robert Anderson: “Thank you to our partners in both state and federal government for their assistance in securing funding for this project. This project shows what can be accomplished when we work together.”

Niagara Falls City Councilwoman Kristen Grandinetti: “I am thrilled to have the privilege of supporting such a momentous project on behalf of the people of Niagara Falls. This has been a long time coming, and our taxpayers deserve to begin seeing the economic benefits that this station can provide.”

Niagara Falls City Councilman Andrew Touma: “This train station is an important piece of the revitalization strategy here in Niagara Falls. This massive improvement to our transportation infrastructure, in conjunction with the removal of the Robert Moses Parkway, will provide unprecedented access to our waterfront and to Main Street.”

The station is expected to create approximately 200 full-time equivalent construction jobs and almost 400 indirect full-time equivalent jobs, at a total of 137,000 man hours. 20-25 separate contracts are expected to be put out to bid before the project is complete, providing local businesses with many opportunities to compete for a role in its construction. The Federal government, in part through a 2010 TIGER II grant from the Federal Railroad Administration, has provided close to 80% of the funding for this project, with the State of New York contributing an additional 10%.
